I will never consider myself a 'yarn snob' at all but I am discovering how nice natural fibers are, even in blends. I'm making my b/f a pair of socks from 100% merino wool and I really like how it's working up. They're just plain socks, not cables, no fancy stitch patterns but the way it looks is so... nice (although I misfigured the length of the foot and have to rip out the heel and redo it...).
I just can't understand why some people automatically stick their noses up at all synthetic yarns. To me, that's a blessing to have yarn that I can use that can be washed and dried in a machine. Yeah, I know... they make super wash wools but still, synthetics have their place.
Although I was sorely tempted to get some non super wash wool when I was at the yarn store, I reasoned that I'd probably forget to hand wash them and end up ruining socks from yarn that was over $20 a hank... not a good thing. So, I'll stick with yarn that can be washed in a machine...
I'm kind of sad that I have to rip back on my b/f's sock. I tried to be careful in judging how far to go but after I got the heel done, I tried it on and it fit me just right, which means that it'll be tight no him. His feet aren't huge but they're not small either. So, I'll rip back, do more foot and hope that it'll be okay for him. These are for part of his Christmas present so I can't just come out and ask him how long his foot is O_o
The funny thing is that I had made some noise about making him socks and he stated that he'd only wear white socks. Well, my sock yarn stash has a lot of loud colors, none that would pass for boring or plain. So, that's why I went to the yarn store in the first place, to find him some plain, white sock yarn. And I got some... expensive, white yarn. I just ripped the heel back (not as hard as I thought it would be... I even got the right amount of stitches on each needle this time). Now maybe I can get this right so he'll have socks that not only look decent but actually fit him.
