It's nice to have a friend that you can talk to about most anything but even better when you're helping her learn how to knit!!! She already crochets so that made it easier to explain how to handle the yarn. Of course, I directed her to knittinghelp.com for the videos. I' m happy to say that she's catching on very fast. She only started a few days ago and she's already purling like a pro. Her stitches are so nice and even... I'm a little jealous but I'm thrilled that she's having such an easy time learning.
I told her that when/if my b/f gets me the Harmony Interchangeable set that I would send her most of my circular needles since I won't be needing them. Believe me, I know how much money you can sink into circular needles!! Figuring that you can spend about $6 a piece on cheap ones and you need probably 6-8 pairs... that adds up in a hurry. I want to save her all that muss and fuss of looking for all that. Plus, I'll probably send her most of my straight needles too. However... my DPNs are staying here LOL I love her dearly but I do love my bamboo DPNs quite a bit.
Although, I could (if I do get the set from my b/f....) I could order the really long cables and magic loop hats instead of using DPNs... so I might reconsider that. Or, I could just get the Harmony DPNs too... decisions, decisions....
I haven't felt like going through my stash since I got back from my b/f's for Thanksgiving. I need to though. I promised a few people stuff from it, including a lady that I really need to get back to about donating some of my yarn. I'm even thinking about giving up some of my Vanna's Choice yarn to my g/f. Honestly... lately, I've been on a sock making jag that I don't think will stop anytime soon. I'm on my 2nd pair and I have plans to make some felted slipper socks for myself too. I have enough Paton's Classic to make 3 big tote bags plus enough for probably at least 2 pair of slippers too.
I found the yarn that I was going to make helmet liners with (dark grey, brown and olive green....) and I might use that for slippers.
Right now, aside from the Harmony needles, I'm obsessed with sock yarn. While in KY last week, my b/f generously went with me to find a local yarn store that had (according to their web site), sock yarn in the kind that I wanted. Well.... the store was closed up! I was furious!! Mainly because, if their location was closed up, they should have had that posted on their site. Well, after that, we stopped at Hobby Lobby, just to see what they had. I ended up picking up a bunch of pretty baby yarn in non-baby-ish colors for me to make socks with, some worsted weight in an interesting colorway (natural browns, tans and greens...).
I had planned on trying to get out to some of the local yarn stores around here but I didn't get up until well after noon (damn you Tylenol PMs....) and most yarn stores don't have 'Walmart hours' so I'll have to give it another shot tomorrow. I saw a while back that Yarn Knit By Sue is moving but now, their site is really not quite there so I don't know what's going on with that. The one time I was there, I really liked their selection of needles and yarn and really wanted to go back there for sock yarn. I guess I'll stop by there tomorrow, just to see. From what I saw, they mostly sell Brown Sheep yarn and they have a sock yarn that sounds like something I'd want to work with... and it's superwash too so that's DEFinitely a plus.
There's a few other shops that I wanted to try too. River Color Studio is another shop in the area. I've heard a lot of good things about Fine Lines also. But, they're on the East Side and I don't get over that way too often but I'm DEFinitely planning on stopping in at some point.
Really, the only reason why I want to go to strictly yarn shops is just for stuff that I can't get at Walmart-type stores, such as hard to find sizes for circular needles and sock yarn that is actually meant for socks. Sassy Stripes is okay and they keep my feet warm but it's really not as soft as I'd want it to be. I'd really like to try 'Sockotta' too. That sounds like it would be good to work with. I also want to try Fixation too. Anything with elastic in it. I really want to make knee socks as my calves get chilled too, in addition to my feet.
